New 6x4 gritting lorry to keep Doncaster’s roads safe this winter
Tuesday 11th February 2020
The roads of Doncaster are getting a new addition to the winter maintenance fleet, set to deal with all conditions the season may throw up.
Supplied by Sherwood Truck and Van to Doncaster Council, the IVECO Stralis X-Way is the first instance where the 6x4 model is being used on gritting routes anywhere in the UK, with the addition of the latest Econ E plough and 9m3 Gritting body.
Combining cutting edge technology with high on the road performance, the X-Way came out as the top choice following the council’s exacting procurement process to add a 15th vehicle to the authority’s winter maintenance fleet.
Doncaster has a network of around 530km of 'A' and 'B' roads and other strategic routes covered for front line winter maintenance and many others as secondary when conditions predict.
Richard Speight, Senior Transport Manager for Doncaster Council, said: “This is our first X-Way and we believe the first in the country to be used for this purpose.
“We already have a number of IVECOs in our wider fleet so we are familiar with the quality and reliability that goes with the name.
“Because it is specially designed for this project as a permanently mounted gritter, it will be assigned to our major arterial route network as front line, joining our other dedicated bulk gritters ensuring safe passage through the borough.”
The Stralis X-Way is gaining popularity with truck drivers across the UK thanks to its payload capacity, fuel efficiency, on-board technologies and robustness.
Shaun Taylor, Municipal Sales Manager at Sherwood Truck and Van, one of the UK’s largest IVECO dealers, said: “The technical side of the Stralis X-Way is going to be a huge benefit to gritting route drivers, as well as residents in and around Doncaster.
“Thanks to its GPS and recording capabilities, there will be detailed analytics to provide an overview of performance and how that can be improved.
“The standard of the GPS technology on board will also enable greater response times for calls where gritting is required reactively.”
